A HISTORY OF ELING FOREST

Eling Forest is part of one of the first large land grants made to settlers in the Highlands in the 1820s. In 1835 it passed to the Morrice brothers, one of whom, John, settled on the eastern side of the Great South Road (now the Hume Highway) and gave the property its name.

Some time in the 1830s a convict-built stone house was erected on the property. This remained in good preservation and has been restored and fitted out with modern amenities. It serves today for casual accommodation in a unique colonial building.

A more grand homestead of local stone and woods was built in 1840 for the family. This has also been lovingly restored and renovated and today serves as a charming venue for heritage B&B accommodation and hospitality for the visitor to enjoy.

In 1990 some 12 acres of vineyards were planted on the property which are the main constituent of our estate-bottled wines.

Eling Forest is today a boutique producer of premium quality cool climate wines, sourced from grapes grown on the property, in the Southern Highlands and other select growing regions.

Benefits of cool climate growing conditions are reflected in the vibrant fruit character that wines of the region display.

In recent years a commercial winery - one of the largest in the region - has been added to the property. It not only produces our own wines but others under contract from nearby vineyards.

Our Cellar Door has a popular café open 7 days a week from 10.00am to 5.00pm and with the adjacent old stables hosts an art and crafts gallery. It also provides tastings and sales of our wines. Phone (02) 4878 9155 for more information.

Tours of the winery are also available.

A purpose-built modern pavilion provides catering for stylish functions and weddings for up to 200 people with gourmet catering by our chefs.

Eling Forest is also a popular destination for families, groups and clubs to meet and enjoy our facilities. Contact us for more information.

We invite visitors to enjoy our pleasant gardens filled with deciduous trees common to the area, relax and dine at the café, tour the winery and taste our cool climate wines, experience our hospitality for weddings and functions, or enjoy a stay in our heritage accommodation.
